Kinetic Die Casting 101: What is a Die Casting Draft Angle?

Die Casting 101: What is a die casting draft angle? Die casting isn’t really new. Engineers and manufacturers know the method of die casting metal products. It refers to the manufacturing of metallic parts and products in the process of injecting molten metal alloy inside a steel die. With high pressure and velocity, the molten metal is suppressed and solidifies into stronger metal parts used in many ways depending on what the product is created for (e.g. car parts, compartments, lighting fixtures, and so on). One might be wondering, “how can the molten metal, as it solidifies and stabilizes, not get stuck inside the die?” The answer is because of the draft angle.

What is a die casting draft angle? Draft angles are the narrow slopes merged in the surface of the area inside the die cast, usually identified on both the opening direction of the die and its sliding cores. What is a die casting draft angle for? To answer the question stated earlier, a draft angle is a factor of the process of die casting that enables the die cast product to be ejected in an easier way. Depending on what the product is, the proper measure of drafts should conform to the die cast product in order to support, both the surface of the die cast and the surface of the product inside.

Draft Angle on an Aluminum Box Enclosure
die cast box enclosure
Picture an Aluminum Box Enclosure sitting on a table with the open side up. The aluminum box is 2 inches deep inside with the height and width 4 inches each way on outside. The walls of the box are 0.10 inches thick. Due to the wall thickness. A few things are evident to a part designer concerning this simple box:
The overall height of the box is 2.10 inches tall.
The interior of the box at the top of the opening is 3.80 inches x 3.80 inches.

A 2 degree draft angle will change the dimensions in the following on the interior and exterior and should be considered if something needs to fit inside the box or outside the box:
The top inside dimension of the box will be 3.80 inches and the bottom inside will be 3.664 inches
The top outside dimension of the box will be 4.00 inches and the bottom outside will be 3.864 inches

If the box was designed for the interior of 4 inches x 4 inches at the bottom: box:
The top inside box dimension needs to be 4.136 inches
The outside top box dimension will be 4.336 inches.

What is a die casting draft angle’s operation during die casting? Draft angles are simply incorporated inside of the die, making its opening wider than its base so that it can easily be ejected.

Aluminum Alloys for Kinetic Die Castings

Aluminum Alloys for Die Castings. Aluminum die casting alloys are metals produced from a combination of two or more metallic elements bearing characteristics applicable to various precision parts. These materials are often used in different industries like electronics, automobile parts, aerospace, appliances, furniture and fixtures, etc.

Below is a list of different kinds of aluminum alloys used by many die casting manufacturing companies.

A360

When high corrosion resistance is the main consideration in producing metal parts, aluminum alloy A360 is used. With shear strength measured at 28 ksi and Tensile Yield Strength at 25 ksi, this alloy definitely absorbs great amount of pressure. At increasing temperature, this alloy demonstrates superior strength. This however is quite difficult to cast and more expensive than A380 alloy. This is the second most common die casting alloy used to produce metal parts like automobile products.

A380

This is the most common and the least expensive from among aluminum alloys for die casting, so much so that it is the most widely cast of all the aluminum alloys available. It has the ultimate combination of material properties applicable to automotive parts, engine brackets, cases of transmission and gears, home and office appliances, hand and power tools, electronics and communications equipment and furniture and fixtures.

A383

Because this aluminum alloy is related to Alloy A380, it is also offered as an alternative to the said Alloy. Although it costs higher compared to Alloy A380, its capabilities goes beyond polished finish. It is used to cast metals with intricate components. It offers high resistance to forces at elevated temperatures.

A413

This is the lightest aluminum alloy with high level of hardness, highest level of thermal and electrical conductivity compared to other aluminum alloys. It is the best choice when choosing parts for hydraulic cylinders and pressure vessels.

Zinc and Aluminum Alloys

Zinc Die Casting ZINC-ALUMINUM (ZA) ALLOYS. There are several different types of alloys available. Die casting alloys can have physical and mechanical properties for pretty much any application a designer or consumer may require.

Zinc die-casting alloys are stronger, harder, and more flexible than other alloys such as aluminum or magnesium. Zinc alloys could be used to cast amazingly miniature, multifaceted shapes. They might be manufactured smoother, modest, more exact, and at lower cost. Zinc die castings can additionally be painted and can be better plated than aluminum or magnesium alloys. Zinc’s low temperature point allows for a longer die life, even when making large quantities of parts. Zinc die-casting is less costly allowing segment fashioners and clients to create tight dimensional tolerances, quick creation process durations, slender divider segments, and high mechanical properties.

To a great degree miniature castings are transported on distinctive hot-chamber machines with high pressure durations. These machines produce close-tolerance castings that also does auxiliary trimming or machining operations. The four-slide machine uses sliding to deliver intensely perplexing and tight-tolerance segments with openings perpendicular to one another, under-cuts, opposite edges, and strings.

Limits on the measure of castings – more appropriate for little castings up to something like seventy-five pounds. Rigging and fail hard costs are high.

Die casting and its effect on the world

Die casting and its effect on the world. In recent years, metal has started being used every day. From PCs to TVs and refrigerators, almost every invention created by scientific research is made out of metal.

With its pliability and conductivity properties, it was not a challenging task for early humans to learn a way to use it: through fire. Ultimately, the technology of metal casting (pouring molten metal into a mold) became the normal for “sculpting” implements out of this element. One of the mutual processes diverging out from this is die casting, or the use of a mold cavity to guide molten metal into shape.

The most stress-free method of doing this is zinc die casting. Parts of zinc appliances and even accessories can be finished using zinc die casting. It is the most common procedure because zinc is not tough to handle. Moreover, it produces sturdy materials which are conducive to power and high temperature. Zinc is also high in ductility, which makes it a great material for various products.

In the process of zinc die casting, parts usually include either a hot-chamber die cast or a cold-chamber die cast (reliant on the requirement of the producer) and zinc (or an alloy). The metal is heated to its boiling point. The subsequent liquid is then dispensed into the mold and will take the shape of said mold.

Really, the processing of metal into a pliable creation is an astounding invention – it would accurately shape the future of the world. Zinc die casting, amid others, has aided making the world an easier place to live in.

Zinc Alloys

Die Casting Zinc Alloys Quick Info. Die casting zinc alloys is a common practice amid metalworkers due to the fact that zinc alloys have several uses.
Zinc
has decent properties: it doesn’t rust, it is light yet durable, it’s non-corrosive, it is multipurpose, and it is easily flexible. Zinc may be shared with other materials such as aluminum, copper, magnesium, and tin, to state a couple. Their arrangements accomplish definite effects dependent on the quantities and types of materials used and the die casting process.
To die cast zinc metals, zinc and other alloys are joined via chemical developments and heated under high temperatures to become fluid. When they attain this molten state, they are forced to pour into die casts where they take on the mold’s design. Upon cooling, the metals keep the shape and stay that way until they are heated again. Here are some ways that zinc alloys are used:
• To coat metal items and guard them from corrosion
• To protect electrical pieces
• To form unbending metal components
• To substitute costly metalworking supplies
• To help as a lightweight alternative for some metal materials
Die casting zinc alloys are worthwhile in generating a lot of things, such as fixtures, vehicles, equipment, tools, weaponry, etc. It is chosen to other means of creating zinc alloys because die casts make it easier for the alloys to be shaped exactly in a little time. Also, it doesn’t take much exertion to pour molten alloy into the cast and let them set resolutely as matched to forging and hammering. Because of its various benefits, die casting zinc alloys has continued to be a extensive practice in metallurgy.
