Aluminum Die Casting Parts Draft Angle-Draft Angle in Die Castings in 2023

Aluminum Die Casting Parts Draft Angle – Draft Angle in Die Castings. When someone asks me “what is draft angle in a box?” or “why do I need a draft angle on my aluminum die casting box part?” The technical answer is, all aluminum die castings require a draft angle on the walls of die cast box parts perpendicular to the parting plane or parallel to the slide interfaces. Since I have selling die cast parts for over 20 years, I find simple answers and provide simple calculations for my customers. What does that mean to the typical engineer (any engineer other than tooling or mechanical) or professional buyer?

I try to give examples that most people can relate to, because most people do not have a need to concern themselves with how things are made, only what is made, and will it be what they need. I ask, “Have you ever noticed on a cupcake the bottom diameter is smaller that the top diameter?” or “Have you noticed that a cake pan has sides that slope in toward the middle of the pan?” That would be an extreme example of a draft angle. Aluminum die castings would stick inside the die casting tool, molds, or die casting die if there was not enough draft angle in the tool and part. The typical draft angle for an aluminum die casting part is two degrees per side. The calculation for that is simple if a person is familiar with die casting production part design, but is not familiar to most people.

Picture an enclosure (or Aluminum Box) sitting on a table with the open side up. The aluminum box is 2″ deep inside with the height and width 4″ each way on outside. The walls of the box are 0.10″ thick. Due to the wall thickness, a few things are evident to a part designer concerning this simple box:

  • The overall height of the box is 2.10″ tall.
  • The interior of the box at the top of the opening is 3.80″ x 3.80″.

A 2 degree draft angle will change the dimensions in the following on the interior and exterior and should be considered if something needs to fit inside the box or outside the box:

  • The top inside dimension of the box will be 3.80″ and the bottom inside will be 3.664″
  • The top outside dimension of the box will be 4.00″ and the bottom outside will be 3.864″

If the box was designed for the interior of 4″ x 4″ at the bottom: box:

  • The top inside box dimension needs to be 4.136″
  • The outside top box dimension will be 4.336″.

How Can Trim Dies Save Me Money on Die Casting Parts in 2023?

How Can Trim Dies Save Me Money on Die Casting Parts? – Is a question, I get asked frequently from potential customers and current customers.

I will discuss what a die casting part trim die is and what it does, but first we need to know a little about how die casting parts are made. The Die Casting Trim Die is part of the die casting part tooling package.

The molten metal is under so much pressure that the metal “flashes” out around the edges of the part inside the die casting mold. This excess metal is also called “flash”. This flash is typically very thin, sometimes paper thin, wall of metal. The flash is frequently sharp and can cut fingers if not handled carefully. After the part cools sufficiently, the flash must be removed before we can ship the die cast part to our customer.

The most common ways to remove flash are:

    • Using a file or sander – Somewhat labor intensive and subject to “artistic interpretation” from the worker. Not always consistent in the process.
    • Using a trim die – A trim die cuts consistently .005″ to .010″ close to edge of the die casting part like a cookie cutter. Is also the fastest way to remove flash.

The trim die is in two parts and each half is bolted on either the upper or lower platen of a trim press. The trim press has typically 15 to 20 tons of closing pressure. The press raises and lowers as the worker actuates the buttons. The die casting part fits perfectly in the trim die bottom, the trim die top half closes on the part and uses a cutting edge to cut the excess metal (flash) away from the part.

Because the trim die cuts the flash from the part accurately and consistently, the part quality is always better when a trim die is used to remove the a flash. So, less money is wasted on poor part quality. The trim press also operates faster than the die casting machine so the flash removal takes less time and labor, thus saving money in part production.

Each of our die casting production cells at Kinetic Die Casting Company has at least one trim press to accommodate a trim die for every die casting production part order. Every customer who owns a trim die, saves money on their part price. Call us today for a FREE competitive part price proposal to make your parts 818-982-9200.

Die Casting Porosity and Its Causes in 2023

Die Casting Porosity and Its Causes. Die Casting porosity is one of the most common defects in the die casting manufacturing industry. What is die casting porosity? Die Casting porosity is a kind of die casting factory imperfection in which the die cast parts have tiny spaces which covers air within the metal – henceforth, the die cast parts become porous. The porosity of die casting parts could weaken the parts itself if the spaces or voids are very big.

To clearly understand the causes of the porosity one must know the basic of the die casting procedure. In a nutshell, die casting procedure includes molding molten metal by placing it inside a short cylinder, and then a great force is applied by a piston connected on the cylinder, pushing the molten metal so it would take the form of the die cast die or die cast mold. During this process, the metal is forced along with the air inside of the cylinder to the die casting mold.

Die casting porosity could be added by several factors like the following:

    Die casting machine pressures.

Temperature of the metal and the mold.

The cleanliness of the materials used.

Design of the die casting mold.

Design of the die casting part.

The shot speed of the die casting machine utilized.

Die casting mold release or die casting spray

Die casting manufacturers use metals that are non-ferrous or metals that don’t have iron. It is because iron content is the chief reason for oxidation and rusting. Non-ferrous metals include magnesium, tin, lead, copper, zinc and aluminum.

Optimal Die Casting Production part Quantity in 2023?

Optimal Die Casting Production Part Quantity? “I need to buy several thousands of parts to buy die castings”. That is the most common myth or false belief people have regarding the optimal die casting part production quantity. We believe, the optimum production quantity of die casting parts is, the quantity of parts you need to buy.

Unfortunately, many die casting companies also believe the “high quantity only” myth. Some die casting companies perpetuate that myth to force their customers into buying more parts than they need. They refuse smaller quantity purchase orders unless their customers pay a very high “set-up charge”. Sometimes, they will push out delivery of lower part quantities to over 12 weeks, in an effort to dissuade the lower quantity part purchase orders. Then sometimes the part quality is “lacking” but the parts are needed so badly, the sub-quality parts are accepted because we do not have 12 more weeks to wait for replacement parts.

Kinetic Die Casting is thrilled to accept die casting part purchase orders of any quantity. We will accept part purchase orders with deliveries of 10,000 parts or less. Many of our part purchase orders have part deliveries of less than 1,000 parts. In fact, many of our aerospace part purchase orders have deliveries of less than 100 parts and sometimes less than 10 parts.

Our part deliveries range from four to six (4-6) weeks for raw castings. No matter what quantity you want, as long as it is less than 10,000 parts. In most cases we will ship your parts in less than six weeks, if we do not need to wait for outside processes to hold up our part delivery.

In most production part purchase orders, we ship your parts the day we make your parts. We do not have departmental delays that can take several days or weeks to process the parts after the parts are produced.

Our optimal die casting part production quantity, is the quantity you want to buy. Contact us today for a competitive price. Your delivery will be less than six weeks.
