Diecasting Metals Cost Increase March 2022

This week, the cost of die casting aluminum alloy increased another $0.05 a pound, in one week. The diecasting metals cost increases are at 10% in the month of March 2022. Zinc alloys and ZA alloys have risen similarly. Our customers will also unfortunately have to pay higher die casting part prices Or I cannot supply them the parts.

If you have a good die casting part supplier, pay the higher part cost. They cannot avoid these materials cost increases. Die Casting Aluminum Alloy Prices in March 2022 are Crazy.

Aluminum Prices March 2022

Die Casting Alloy Materials Are Crazy. I am getting calls from the customers of my competitors asking that I quote a part price. I always refuse to quote because my competitor is facing the same material cost increases I am facing. Some die casting materials, like za27, are not available today. I will have to wait a few weeks for material. I’ve never seen this before.

In the past, prior to 2020, the die casting metal alloy prices were like gentle waves on the ocean, they go up, they come down. I have always ridden the waves in the past by not increasing or changing the part prices for material increases. But I can’t ride the increased material costs anymore.

Today, the cost of aluminum alloy for die casting increased another $0.05 a pound. Zinc alloys have risen similarly. That is an increase that I have never seen in my 30 years in business. My customers will also unfortunately have to pay a higher part price Or I cannot supply them the parts.

If you have a good supplier, pay the higher part cost. They cannot avoid the cost increases. Die Casting Aluminum Alloy Prices in March 2022 are Crazy.

The Different Alloys Used at Kinetic Die Casting Manufacturing

Die Casting Alloys – The Different Alloys Used in Die Casting Manufacturing. Kinetic Die Casting Company uses different types of metal die casting alloys depending on the needs of our customers.

    The Die Casting Alloys we use are:

  • A360 aluminum die casting alloy
  • A380 aluminum die casting alloy
  • A383 aluminum die casting alloy
  • A413 aluminum die casting alloy
  • ZA27 die casting alloy
  • #3 zinc die casting alloy
  • #5 zinc die casting alloy

A380 is the die casting alloy we use the most. About 80% of our parts are produced in A380. A380 is the least expensive aluminum alloy. It is very versatile for a very nice finish on a die casting part.

A360 aluminum die casting alloy is used when corrosion resistance is required. It is used by many manufacturers whose parts are exposed to salt spray or other corrosive environments.

A413 die casting alloy is another alloy we use to produce a lot of parts. This alloy is used in a lot of thermal conductance applications (heat sinks). It has a very nice surface finish and can be used to cast thinner walls. It has better corrosion resistance than A380.

A383 alloy is less expensive than A413 and also is used when the die casting part wall thicknesses are thinner than normal.

ZA27 die casting alloy is used when greater die casting part strength is needed. This die casting alloy is a marriage between aluminum and zinc.

#3 and #5 zinc die casting alloys are the most common alloys used for zinc die casting. Many of the products that were produced in zinc are now made in aluminum or plastic. Zinc makes up less than 10% of the die casting parts made in America today.

A380 Aluminum Alloy verses A413 Aluminum Alloy

The two more common types of die casting aluminum used by Kinetic die Casting Company are A380 aluminum and A413 aluminum. There are reasons to use either metal.

So here are a few of the details (http://www.kineticdiecasting.com/casting_aluminum.html):

A380
Availability – More
Material cost – Less
Flexibility – More
Thermal Conductivity – Less
Electrical Conductivity  – More
Pounds/Inch – More
Pressure Tight – Less
Surface Polish – Less

A413
Availability – Less
Material cost – More
Flexibility – Less
Thermal Conductivity – More
Electrical Conductivity – More
Pounds/Inch – Less
Pressure Tight – More
Surface Polish – More

A380 is the most common die casting aluminum used worldwide. Most part blue prints do not call out the aluminum type so the default is A380.

Aluminum Alloy Casting

The Process of Aluminum Castings. Die casting is probably not a new term for you because everywhere you look; you will see parts and equipments that employed this process for them to be created. Now, aluminum is among the few metals that can be utilized in casting metals. These processes of aluminum casting are the following: permanent mold casting, die casting, investment casting, plaster casting, sand casting (include dry sand and green sand), and continuous casting. Some of the other processes in aluminum casting also include squeeze casting, lost foam, and hot iso-static pressing.

Basically, there are various factors that should be taken to account in the selection of a particular casting process specially in making a detailed aluminum alloy part. Among the most vital factors consist of:

* Quality factor.
* Feasibility
* Cost factor

When talking about feasibility, a lot of aluminum alloy castings may be done using any available methods but for general castings, this process is highly determined by the dimensions or the features of the design. Furthermore, the quality factor is considered as well. Be reminded that the term “quality” when applied to casting would refer to the degree of reliability as well as the levels of mechanical properties which include the strength and ductility. The act of determining the act is also important.

Aluminum castings are considered as easy process as compared to manufacturing other kinds of products but expertise is still needed because not all people can do it properly. In fact, good skill and reliable materials are compulsory in this procedure.
