Premier Lakewood Die Casting Plant Closure

Premier Lakewood Inc. Plant To Close In May
Economy Cited As Reason; 75 Workers Affected
February 11, 2014

LAKEWOOD- Premier Lakewood Inc., a Michigan-owned company located on 201 Winchester Road in Lakewood, will be closing its doors on May 6, displacing 75 employees.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification from the New York state Department of Labor, layoffs will begin on May 1 and continue through May 6. Economic reasons have been cited for the closure. Calls made to the plant on Monday were not returned.

According to a Post-Journal article from 2006, the plant has been in Lakewood since 1946. Premier Lakewood Inc. purchased the company from Lexington Die Casting in 2005. Lexington Die Casting, which had owned the plant since 1992, set to close the factory for good, leaving their remaining 45 employees out of luck. However, due to a collaborative effort between the previous owners, local development leaders and New York state officials, the jobs and factory alike were saved.

In the same 2006 Post-Journal article, Paul Brancaleon, president of the Michigan-based Premier Tool and Die Cast Corporation – which the Lakewood branch is a part of, went on record speaking of tripling Lakewood operations and stepping up production five-fold over the next three years.

Premier Lakewood takes in hundreds of tons of recycled aluminum every month, melts it down and channels it through dozen of die casters. This is then shaped into strong, light-weight parts, half for automobiles and half for other commodities.

It is sad to me to see another US Die Casting Manufacturing Company close their doors. I feel sorry for the 75 displaced workers in New York. I hope they will be able to find comparable work locally. We are experiencing growth in southern California. We wish you all the best luck for the workers and owners of Premier Die Casting Company for the future.

Additional Technical Die Casting Terms

Additional Technical Die Casting Terms. The pillar of modern manufacturing industries nowadays is the metal forming industries. The process of die casting aluminum metals produces tons of precision metal parts, primary products and by-products. Besides the basic terms used in die casting manufacturing procedure, it is important to know additional technical die casting terms.

Dowel Pin

It is a semi-permanent guide pin primarily used to maintain alignment between cavities in two halves die.

Eject

It is the process of pushing the hardened casting out of the die.

Gooseneck Machine

It is also known as Hot-Chamber Machine. It is mainly used with zinc, tin and lead-based alloys.

Hot Short

It is a term used to describe an die cast alloy which lacks ductility or has a tendency to become brittle at elevated temperatures. Materials of such characteristics do not have enough tensile strength to resist stresses resulting from cooling.

Intergranular Corrosion

It is a type of corrosion characterized by cracking along grain boundaries of metals or alloys upon exertion of tensile stress. Local difference in the composition common in alloy castings is often the cause of this circumstance.

Shot Blasting

It is a process of cleaning metal where a fluid blast off abrasive steel balls against the surface for a clear finish.

Shut-Off

It is a point where the surfaces of the two halves die are fitted together to stop the flow of liquefied metal between them.

Sprue

It is a hole in a die casting tooling in a hot-chamber die casting machine which is the primary entry point of molten metals towards the chamber.

Secure Mounting for Electronics

Secure Mounting for Electronics. Electronic items are usually very fragile and require only a single fall before being permanently damaged like aluminum guitar amplifiers. Another problem is that many of these items are usually mounted onto walls to save space and to increase their output. A good method to solve this problem is by simply putting these items on top of other surfaces. However, this reduces the quality of their output. The best solution is to purchase aluminum brackets to safely secure the electronic items on the wall.

Aluminum brackets are L-shaped pieces of metal that are used in pairs to make a surface for mounting electronics. These are oftentimes used in mounting speakers and other sound related electronics. The more recent application for this item is the mounting of computer monitors and flat screen televisions onto the wall. The variety of brackets that are used for this purpose have a swivel feature which allows the user to adjust the screen.

When purchasing aluminum brackets, it is important to first determine the product on which the bracket would be used on. This would dictate the type of bracket that could be used, the weight carrying capacity of the bracket, and the features that could be present in the bracket. Although this may seem as a hindrance for most people, it actually is not. Brackets are usually labelled with the products that they are compatible with so that customers do not have to bring their electronic items along with them. Also, brackets may come with the package of the electronic item being purchased making it redundant to purchase brackets in the first place.

The following are some of the best characteristics of die casting:

It can provide varied complex metallic dimensions within much closer tolerances compared to other mass production systems.

Enclosure components, military parts, lighting fixture components, consumer metal parts, appliance items, and housing parts and other zinc products are now being implemented in automotive industries, hardware, and airplane parts and other die castings are carried out at a higher rate of production. If you want near net shape output, this is also possible. In addition to this, once the shape has been attained, little or even no machining is needed.

Several parts or components which were produced using the die casting process can also be generated with thinner walls. It will be difficult for other types of casting techniques to achieve the same results as the ones that you can easily attain when you make use of Kinetic Die Casting.

Reports also show that the parts that are generated or produced using die casing procedures are more durable compared to plastic injection moldings that have the same dimension.

When you scrutinize the zinc enclosure items, airplane components, Industrial items, metal casting parts, automotive items, and housing components and other zinc components, you will see that using this type of die casting system will generate parts which are dimensionally stable, durable, and have the right quality, feel and strength.

Supplier, Kinetic Die Casting (www.kineticdc.com) produces tens of thousands of similar castings within specified tolerances prior to incorporating additional tools and increments. Contact them at sales@kineticdc.com.

Aluminum casting products can be painted using minimum surface preparation so you can conveniently maintain these items.

When searching for materials that went through die casting, you have to make sure that you find parts that were produced with surfaces that can provide many kinds of textures. You can always expect the end products to be a lot smoother than other forms of castings. Additionally, the holes in different parts which were produced using the die cast procedure can be easily cored into different shapes and made to tap drill dimensions.

External thread on products using this type of production system can easily undergo die casting. These parts can provide the right integral fastening elements like studs. In this line, if you want the best die cast products, it is suggested that you first find the right company that is known for providing these products.

Other advantages that you can obtain from the right die casting processes:

Different types of non-metals and metals can undergo die casting, and after this process, the end products will now have a higher level of strength and durability.

Many types of aluminum alloys can be used for varied purposes. Product resistance to corrosion rates from good to high so you can be assured that you’ll eventually get good value for your hard earned cash. Components that have undergone die casting are monolithic; thus, you can combine various functions in a single shaped part.

Brackets for Electronics

Brackets for Electronics. Electronics such as stereo systems made out of speaker parts need an ample amount of space so that they could be fully appreciated. Usually, these items are placed on desks, tables, or shelves. This, however, limits their full functionality since some electronics require a greater area than the space present on these locations. The best placement for these kinds of electronics is on prime locations on the wall. The wall offers a lot of real estate to place electronics on. The only problem is how the electronics will be placed on the wall. The simple answer to that problem is through the use of aluminum brackets.

Aluminum brackets are oftentimes packaged with wall-mounted electronics although some manufacturers sell them separately. They can be found in most hardware stores and DIY stores. These brackets are usually packaged with all of the necessary screws and materials that are needed to start mounting the electronic device onto the wall. Sometimes, these brackets are sold as pairs to give customers a bargain.

Since not all electronic items have the same specifications and dimensions, it is important to know what size of aluminum bracket to buy. A safe estimate would be an aluminum bracket which has the same specifications as those packaged with electronic items. In this way, the customer will be sure that the bracket is able to support devices having the same weight. Another good method is by checking the item number of popular brackets and then cross-referencing them with the item numbers of the brackets in stock.
