Beginnings of Die Casting
Beginnings of Die Casting. Die casting was invented by Elisha K. Root in the 1830s. She was an inventor in the employ of Samuel W. Collins’ ax-making company in Canton, Connecticut.
As early mid-1800, the first examples of die casting occurred. In 1849, a patent was awarded for the first manually operated machine for casting printing type. Development of other shaped began toward the end of the century. In the early 1900s, mass production of parts of phonographs and cash registers began.
The first alloys used in die casting molds were compositions of tin and lead. Their use decreased when zinc and aluminum alloys were introduced in 1914. This was soon followed by magnesium and copper, and by the 1930s, more modern alloys were introduced.
The process of die casting developed from low-pressure injection to high-pressure die castings. These modern processes, squeeze casting and semi-sailed die casting, produce high integrity castings.
Developments in the refinements of alloy as well as the process of die casting continued. Die casters now produce castings in many sizes and shapes. These castings are also durable and dimensionally precise.
Die castings is one of the mass-produced items in metalworking. Die casting parts are found in consumer, commercial and industrial products. They are one of the biggest volume items produced by the metalworking industry.
Dies, or die cast tooling, die cast tools and die casting molds have efficient styles, sizes and values. They come in single cavities or multiple cavities. Some die cast tools cost a few hundred dollars for trim dies. Cavity inserts cost a few thousand dollars while a complete die cast tool package costs several thousand dollars.

EA to cut 1,500 Jobs
Videogame giant Electronic Arts posted a net loss for the 11th consecutive quarter on Nov. 9 and said it was cutting 1,500 jobs, or 16% of its workforce.
EA reported a net loss of $391 million in its fiscal second quarter, which ended on September 30, compared with a net loss of $310 million a year ago.
EA said revenue rose 2% in the quarter to a record $1.147 billion behind the launches of “FIFA 10,” “Madden NFL 10,” “The Beatles: Rock Band,” “Need for Speed,” “SHIFT” and “NCAA Football 10.”
The Redwood City, Calif.-based videogame publisher said it was cutting some 1,500 jobs as part of a plan to “narrow its product portfolio to provide greater focus on titles with higher margin opportunities.”
It said the plan, expected to be completed by March 31, 2010, will include the closure of several facilities and will result in annual cost savings of at least $100 million and restructuring charges of $130 million to $150 million.
EA announced earlier on Nov. 9 that it has acquired London-based social network game maker Playfish in a deal that could be worth up to $400 million. EA said it had bought Playfish, which makes games for Facebook, MySpace and other social networks, for $275 million in cash and $25 million in equity retention arrangements for employees. In addition, EA said it will pay up to $100 million if the privately held Playfish reaches certain performance milestones through December 31, 2011.
“EA is performing well, with quality, sales and segment share up so far this year,” EA chief executive John Riccitiello said. “We are making tough calls to cut cost in targeted areas and investing more in our biggest games and digital businesses,” he said.

Aluminum Die Casting Company what it can do for you
Aluminum Die Casting Company – what it can do for you. Manufacturers of all kinds and industry commonly make use of a material known as aluminum. This material is a metal alloy which has a unique characteristic that has led others to say that this metal is more precious than gold although this material is very abundant. This unique characteristic of aluminum is that it is very tough, strong and durable. It is said that this metal is even stronger than steel. But at the same time, aluminum is surprisingly light in weight compared to other metals. This is why manufacturers of cars, automobiles, electronics and other products use this material in their goods. To get vast quantities of the parts that they need, manufacturers can enlist the services of an Aluminum Die Casting Company.
An Aluminum Die Casting Company specializes in the procedure of shaping aluminum bars into the parts that the manufacturers need, this is known as die casting. This process starts off with aluminum bars that are melted with the use of high temperatures. When the metal is turned to liquid, they are injected into molds known as castings. The liquid metal will then take the shape of the mold and once it hardens, it becomes the finished product, albeit some finishing touches.
The services provided by an Aluminum Die Casting Company can be very valuable to a manufacturer. It is a fast and cheap method of creating high quality parts for their products and they are relatively easy to find because they can be found almost everywhere with a quick search of the phonebook or internet.
Automotive Production Up at GM Canada
Automotive Production Up at GM Canada. Some 150 previously laid-off employees are set to return to work at a General Motors manufacturing plant in Canada to meet rising demand for sport utility vehicles, officials said on Nov. 9.
The Ingersoll, Ontario plant, owned by GM-Suzuki Motor Corp. joint venture CAMI Automotive, received a 90-million dollar (US$85 million) injection to retool and renovate its body shop over the next seven months.
The refurbishing aims to boost the plant’s capacity in order to meet strong demand for the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, said GM. The vehicles are “two of GM’s hottest selling products,” Arturo Elias, president of GM Canada, said.
“This investment is an excellent example of what happens when you get the product right,” he said. “If the product is right, everything else follows — increased production, increased employment and strong market demand.”
The upgrade will allow production at the plant of an additional 40,000 vehicles annually for the Canadian and U.S. markets.
The staff recall is in addition to more than 300 employees re-hired in October, and marks CAMI’s return to full staffing with no remaining employees on layoff.

The Advantages of Magnesium Die Casting
The Advantages of Magnesium Die Casting. Magnesium die casting is one of the current trends in the manufacturing industry. More and more companies are inserting this into their manufacturing processes, for the many distinct advantages of magnesium die casting.
One advantage of using magnesium die casting is that it makes processes which need a large quantity of small to medium sized parts easier. Die casting makes production less reliant on measurements, so the process moves faster and smoother than measuring out each part every time.
Magnesium die casting also eliminates secondary machining. Once the parts are made from the die casting, there is no need for additional processes to be made upon the part. This saves time, and more importantly, lessens production costs for the company.
This process also creates parts with excellent dimensional accuracy. Since the molds used for magnesium die casting are permanent, all the parts made are consistent with each other. This is especially important when the parts being made are used in delicate machineries, such as in the engine of an automobile or in the electronic components of laptops.
There are many more advantages of magnesium die casting. Each one of these contribute to making magnesium diecasting very attractive to the manufacturing industry.
