Auto Parts Suppliers Mexico and Italy
TRAVERSE CITY, MICH. — While the North American auto industry may have been taking a series of economic hits, international auto suppliers are still looking to the U.S. for future growth.
Mexico’s Grupo Bocar is building a third injection molding plant for its Plastic Tec group, and headed north to the auto industry’s Management Briefing Seminars, being held Aug. 4-7 in Traverse City, to promote its capabilities.
The Mexico City-based company already is a direct supplier to U.S., European and Japanese-based carmakers. It has three business units producing aluminum die cast parts, machined parts and plastics. It came to Traverse City to boost its profile and show off its capabilities.
Plastic Tec currently has plants in Mexico City and Lerma, Mexico, with a combined 80 injection molding presses, ranging in size from 25 to 1,600 tons. The new plant, which is now under construction in San Luis Potosi, will add another 25 to 30 presses.
“We are not a shoot and ship company,” said Jaime Puente, office manager. “We have state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.”
Plastic Tec made the first in-mold application of a textile skin for an auto interior part in North America for Volkswagen AG’s Jetta. It makes air vents for BMW AG’s assembly plant in Spartanburg, S.C., replacing parts previously made in Europe, Puente said.
Italian auto suppliers, meanwhile, are touting their knowledge of Fiat SpA — a relationship that takes on added importance now that Fiat has purchased a controlling interest in Chrysler Group LLC of Auburn Hills, Mich.
“[Fiat and Chrysler] are in an early limbo stage now but there are opportunities it is going to happen,” said Luigi Giachino, business development manager for Mecaprom Technologies Corp., of Bergamo, Italy, in an interview at the Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City.
Mecaprom recently opened its first Detroit-area office, in Plymouth, Mich., and it is looking for a partner in the region that it can team with to combine its knowledge on small engine development with Fiat.
The company is just part of an outreach from auto suppliers in Italy through the Italian American Alliance for Business and Technology. The alliance of auto suppliers located around Turin, Italy — which is home to Fiat — wants to make connections with Chrysler and its supply base.
Many of the alliance companies have had business in North America in the past, but expect to build on that now that Fiat will be working with Chrysler on future small vehicles, said Alliance President Massimo Denipoti.

Amcast Die Casting added to EPA Superfund List
September 23, 2009 (CEDARBURG, Wis.) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added a Cedarburg site to its list of hazardous-waste sites.
The location is the former site of Amcast Industrial Corp. That’s a now-bankrupt company, which was involved in aluminum die casting from 1939 to 2004.
The EPA announced Wednesday it was adding the site to its Superfund National Priorities List. Superfund is a federal program that investigates and cleans up the most severe hazardous-waste sites in the country.
The EPA has said contamination from Amcast’s operations polluted the plant property and adjacent sewers. It also polluted a number of nearby ponds and private property, and may have reached the Milwaukee River about five miles away.

Aluminum Lighting Fixtures Efficient Manufacturing
Aluminum Lighting Fixtures – Efficient Manufacturing. Aluminum Lighting Fixtures are used in buildings, homes, tunnels and other man made structures that would eventually need artificial lighting because the sun’s rays doesn’t reach them. It is an integral part of any man made building because people rely mainly on their eyes to navigate and accomplish tasks, without lighting they wouldn’t be able to work or get to where they need to. Aluminum Lighting Fixtures are also used in outdoor lighting as well. This means that they will be exposed to sun, rain and other elements which can damage them. They use aluminum so that it can last longer.
Aluminum is one of the most durable and strongest materials that are used today. It is more durable, if not just as durable as steel, but at the same time it is cheaper as well. This metal can be mined all over the world which makes it very accessible. Also, aluminum is just a third in weight compared to steel which makes it easier to work with. In turning the metal into the finished product, nothing is better than using die casting.
Die casting is a manufacturing process which is similar to permanent mold casting. The first step is the same wherein the material used is melted into liquid form. The difference is that in die casting, the liquid is injected into high pressure molds. They will then be allowed to cool and solidify and the result is that die casted Aluminum Lighting Fixtures are better accuracy in dimensions, smoother surface and much more uniform compared to permanent mold casting.

Investment in Renewable Energy
By Steve Minter
Investment in renewable energy, our political leaders keep telling us, is supposed to result in good-paying American jobs, stimulate old-fashioned American innovation, free us from our dependence on foreign oil and lead to a resurgence in U.S. manufacturing. That’s a tall order for government and industry to fill, even without a recession clinging like a frightened child, but there is evidence that some U.S. companies are up to the challenge.
Take Ioxus Inc., a small start-up with 16 employees located in Oneonta, N.Y. The company was founded in 2006 by parent Custom Electronics to develop and produce ultracapacitors, an electrochemical energy storage device that can augment or even supplant batteries. While ultracapacitors have been available commercially since the late 1970s, the market for these devices has surged in recent years. Compared to batteries, explains Chad Hall, Ioxus’ chief operations officer, ultracapacitors offer high power density, quick charging and discharging, stable operation in a wide temperature range, and the ability to cycle hundreds of thousands of times.
Michael Tentnowski, vice president of marketing for Ioxus, tells those unfamiliar with the technology to think of it like a bicyclist’s water bottle. If the bottle is a battery, you squeeze it and only a little water, or power, comes out. But if the water bottle were an ultracapacitor, power is supplied in a rush as if you cut off the whole lid. Since ultracapacitors come on fast and strong, they are good at providing backup power if there is an interruption, or responding to peak demands.
“The ultracapacitor advantage is it provides for burst power,” explains Hall. “If a factory turns on a large motor, there is a big requirement for peak power. The ultracapacitor can provide that peak power while allowing the fuel cell or grid line or battery to maintain a nice, steady output of energy which increases the life of those products.”
They also are well suited to a variety of renewable energy applications because of their cycle endurance. “As we move to a smart grid, there are a lot of different technologies — wind, solar, wave generation — that are all cyclic,” Hall observes. “At one given point, wind is blowing and then it is not. You need energy storage and the capability to deliver energy when you need it. Almost all the renewable green technologies require an ultracapacitor to provide a real solution for the customer.”
Ultracapacitors hold huge promise for transportation applications. For example, they can be used in hybrid buses to provide initial power as the bus starts up. This allows a relatively small diesel engine to be used to provide running power. When the bus brakes, the ultracapacitors can store regenerative energy. Hall said such an arrangement reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 75% and increases fuel efficiency by 50%. Similarly, ultracapacitors can be used in hybrid electric cars to boost acceleration and reduce demand on batteries, significantly increasing their useful life.
Ioxus is in a field with such substantial players as Maxwell Technologies, NessCap, EEStor, Nippon Chemi-Con and Power Systems Co. Ioxus has 12 patent applications. Hall says the differentiator for its products is high power density. “We have more capacitance in a smaller area than the competition — typically 30% more capacitance in 90% of the space,” he claims.
Ioxus began commercial production in July. When asked about the view in some quarters that manufacturing in the U.S. faces bleak prospects, Hall, a lean manufacturing advocate, disagrees. “I don’t have a sense that manufacturing in the U.S. is gloom and doom. I think we need to take a step back and get smarter and more creative. When you look at our company, we have created a higher-performing product in the U.S. that matches or beats Asian pricing.” In an innovative technology arena, that is an old-fashioned formula for success.
August Layoffs USA Manufacturing Worst Hit
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The number of mass layoffs by U.S. employers rose by 533 in August from July, with the manufacturing sector the hardest hit, Labor Department data showed on Wednesday.
The number of mass layoff actions — defined as job cuts involving at least 50 people from a single employer — rose to 2,690 last month, affecting 259,307 workers. That brought the total of mass layoffs so far this year to 21,184.
A total of 279 mass layoff events were reported in the manufacturing sector in August, the department said.
While the broader economy appears to be recovering from its deepest and longest recession in 70 years, unemployment continues to rise. There are fears rising joblessness could hamper the recovery.
The U.S. unemployment rate hit a 26-year high of 9.7 percent in August, and many economists expect it to peak above 10 percent early next year.
In the 21 months since the start of the recession, the total number of mass layoff events was 44,669, accounting for over 4.56 million jobs, the department said.
