Amcast Die Casting added to EPA Superfund List

September 23, 2009 (CEDARBURG, Wis.) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added a Cedarburg site to its list of hazardous-waste sites.

The location is the former site of Amcast Industrial Corp. That’s a now-bankrupt company, which was involved in aluminum die casting from 1939 to 2004.

The EPA announced Wednesday it was adding the site to its Superfund National Priorities List. Superfund is a federal program that investigates and cleans up the most severe hazardous-waste sites in the country.

The EPA has said contamination from Amcast’s operations polluted the plant property and adjacent sewers. It also polluted a number of nearby ponds and private property, and may have reached the Milwaukee River about five miles away.
