Evaluating Aluminum Die Castings used for Motorcycles

Evaluating Aluminum Die Castings used for Motorcycles. Traditionally, motorcycle parts are created through sand casting. In order to produce more volume in less time, and to improve the specifications of the parts, manufacturing companies shifted to die casting. Aluminum die castings used for motorcycles have better finishes and stronger builds.

Often, the first noticeable die cast parts of a motorcycle are the motor and the frame. These are made from aluminum, usually of grade A380. The frame of the motor has a very intricate design. It has ridges, holes and notches to accommodate the engine, screws and other attachments. Such difficult design is best made by die casting. To make die castings used for motorcycles, a pair of dies is used as the mold cavity. Molten aluminum is processed at lower temperatures, in a process called “cold” chamber casting.

You can easily spot a well-crafted aluminum motor casing. A smooth external finish is an indication of fine post-machining procedures, like trimming excess aluminum and sanding the surface. The modern method for the casing is central-vacuum die casting, which still employs cold-chamber casting. In some cases, some parts of the motor are casted individually. Then, they will be joined by screws or by welding.

Die castings used for motorcycles are also evaluated in terms of porosity. This can be microscopically examined. Porosity refers to the number and size of air bubbles inside the finished motor case. More bubbles means that your case can easily fail or break due to heating or impact. Competitive manufacturers pass the standards of OEM and ODM. Their products are also tested on load and temperature conditions by scientists.
