Die Cast Tooling and Its Forms. Die cast tooling are the dies and the molds used for die casting. These die cast tools many forms namely Trim Dies used for die cast parts, Die Cast Family Mold Tooling, Complete Class “A” Die Cast Mold Tooling or Die Tooling, Unit Die Tooling, Prototype Die Cast Tooling Inserts and Die Cast Tooling Inserts.

I would be focusing this article on the latter form, the die cast tooling inserts since among all the die cast tooling, these are the least expensive. These actually are just enough steel to create cavities plus extra steel to put up with the fluctuations of the temperature of molten metal injecting under force. To extend the tooling life, the inserts should be heat treated to reach their proper hardness, not too hard and not too soft. Making it too soft will cause it to easily get damaged or easily wear from erosion and making it too hard, on the other hand could result to the steel cracking due to high temperature. Toolmakers who do not use enough steel in the inserts may reduce its potential life.

The die casting tooling inserts need to be supported by a type of holder so that metal could be injected into it and also to provide a sort of a path for the metal to pass and go in while the gases escape. These gases should be removed because it can produce porosity. This holder of inserts are called unit die, family die or mold base.

Die casting is no simple task. You would need to ask expert toolmakers to do this job for you. You just simply need to look online for you to find the expert that could help you. Aluminum Die Cast Tooling. Aluminum die casting is a metalworking process mainly used to create several small to medium sized parts. This process results in parts with the almost exact same dimensions, smooth surface finish and with incredibly high detail. The process of aluminum die casting typically involves molten metal to be forced into molds under high pressure to create each part. Then, they are machined into dies. Common metals used for this process are non ferrous metals such as tin, copper, magnesium, zinc, lead and aluminum; although ferrous materials can also be used. Due to the versatility of this process, it has become one of the highest volume of products made in the industry.

The first of the Die Cast Tools used in this process is known as the die cast tooling or die cast mold. This mold is made from strengthened steel and can come in several shapes and sizes. They are available in single cavity, where one part is created per cycle, and multiple cavity, where several parts are created in a single cycle. These molds and tooling can cost for as low as a few hundred dollars for the simpler molds and would cost several thousand dollars for larger and complex molds.

Other Aluminum Die Cast Tools used for the process of die casting are the machinery; namely the gooseneck machine or hot chambered machine and the cold chambered machine. These machines have different advantages as well as advantages and it would depend upon what metal is being used to determine which machine is to be used.

Die Casting Molds. Perhaps the most important tool used in die casting is the different Die Casting Molds used. These molds are responsible in shaping the molten metal which is placed in them. They mold the metal into the desired shape of the manufacturer. But, what is die casting any way?

Die casting is a metalworking process that is best used by manufacturers to create a large quantity of small sized to medium sized parts in a short amount of time. This is done first by melting the metal, usually non ferrous metals such as aluminum, lead, magnesium or zinc among others, then forcing them into the Die Casting Molds. The molds are then machined into dies to create the parts and complete the process.

The machines responsible for machining these molds in dies are known as hot chambered die casting machines and cold chambered die casting machines. The hot chambered machines can accomplish the task with fewer cycles involved in the process; in other words it can accomplish the task faster compared to a cold chambered machine. The latter is used by manufacturers in cases where in the hot chambered machine cannot accommodate the alloy being used. They complete the task slower because the metal needs to be melted in a separate furnace and the time it takes to transfer them into the machine makes the difference.

The Die Casting Molds used in these machines can be rather expensive. They are built from hardened metal and could cost as much as several thousand dollars.

The process known as die casting is mainly used in the metalwork industry to create a great number of parts of the same specifications by forcing molten metal which are under high pressure into molds or Die Cast Tooling. This process results in uniform results from most of the products and the finish is smooth and of high quality. The dimensions of each part is almost exactly the same with only about 0.2% difference which means that there is little need for post production clean up or machining.

There are two machines used in die casting, namely the hot chambered die cast machine and the cold chambered die cast machine. Each machine has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages such as the hot chambered die cast machine can finish the product in less time than the cold chambered die cast machine; however there are non ferrous metals that cannot be die casted using the former. Whichever machine a company is using, it is essential that they give some time and thought into the Die Casting Tooling as these are the most crucial tools of the whole process.

Die cast molds or Die Casting Tooling can be very expensive. They are made from hardened steel and they come in different shapes and sizes. Their cost can vary from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on the size and complexity of the mold. There are single cavity molds and several cavity molds to cater to whatever the manufacturer needs to accomplish.
